Trades I wish I'd made

Looking back with regret...

Spent several weeks trying to do a trade with Ken during the offseason to pick up Brian Roberts in exchange for D'Angelo Jimenez. After some tweaking efforts, Ken offered:

Brian Roberts
Travis Harper
Garrett Anderson

for

D'Angelo Jimenez
Francisco Cordero
Richard Hidalgo

Boy was I stupid to pass that up. Anderson's defense scared me away, already having a 4 in right with Sheffield. But now, the Clips have an anemic batting average. Brian Roberts is an early MVP candidate for the Orioles; D'Angelo Jimenez has been designated for assignment by the Reds. Francisco Cordero gives up walks every time I bring him in, and Richard Hidalgo is useless in Strat and hitting about .200 for the Rangers. What a dope I was.

Titans rebound to drub Clips 3-2

Updates for everyone's May records are here.

Game FourSuperior 18, Applegate 10. It all began innocently enough. Two outs in the top of the first, nobody on. Then, a walk to Brad Wilkerson, a groundball 2b (x) through the legs of D’Angelo Jimenez, and a three-run homer by Wily Mo Pena. In the second inning, the floodgates burst open on Ted Lilly, ignited by a leadoff error by Khalil Greene. A pair of doubles, a sac fly and a walk made it 5-0. Miguel Batista replaced Lilly, served up a single to Pena to load the bases, and then Troy Glaus unloaded them with a solid HR to make it 9-0. The Clips’ offense came too little, too late. Batista absorbed an 11-run, 15-hit relief outing. Brian Lawrence got the win despite allowing three homers (Ortiz, Chavez, Varitek.) Four players had three hits for Superior and Glaus and Jason Bay had five RBIs.

Game FiveSuperior 8, Applegate 4. Kevin Millwood got his first Titan start and surrendered a homer, double and triple in the first inning as the Clips jumped out to a 3-1 lead. But a five-run third inning, capped by a Troy Glaus three-run homer, KO’d Brett Tomko and put Superior in control. Millwood, up 7-3, got out of a big jam in the fourth, as Applegate loaded the bases with one out and brought in Frank Thomas to pinch-hit, but Thomas fanned and D’Angelo Jimenez flied out to end the threat.

Miguel Cabrera hit .550 in the series (11 for 20) and scored 11 runs. Glaus drove in 10 while hitting just .238.

The Clips finish the month at 8-12:

2-3 home A series vs. Detroit
2-3 home B series vs. Superior
1-4 road A series at Tropical
3-2 road B series at Bushwood

We’ve now slipped below .500 to 29-31 through 60 games.

Box score links

OK, I concede something's wrong with the box score links in this blog... I'm working on it. Seems Yahoo! might block access to these files, that's where I'm uploading them to. The links work fine for me but that's because I'm also logged into my Yahoo! account at the same time...

Clips take 2 of first 3 with Titans

Click here to get May standings updates

GAME ONE:
Applegate 12, Superior 6. The ball was flying out of Applegate Park, with the Clips crushing six homers, including Darin Erstad’s first two homers of the year and Brian Schneider’s first, in the Clips’ 12-6 romp. Superior’s Josh Beckett was KO’d in the fourth, having served up three homers, eight runs and 10 hits. Gary Sheffield also homered twice for Applegate, giving him 16 on the year. Wade Miller went the distance for the home squad, although he did cough up three long balls.

GAME TWO: Superior 3, Applegate 2. Jake Peavy pitched great for Superior, allowing the Clips just two hits through five innings, as his mates built up a 3-0 lead. But he tired quickly in the sixth, following a single, walk, DP and another walk, leading to a call to the bullpen. Dan Haren induced a LF (x) roll with David Ortiz up, which Miguel Cabrera could not handle, and suddenly it was 3-2. But Mark Hendrickson, who pitched 4 1/3 innings in Game One, pitched two innings of one-hit relief, and Greg Aquino closed it out. Cabrera was 4-for-5 for Superior and Ortiz had three of Applegate’s five hits.

GAME THREE: Applegate 8, Superior 7. In a game of Insane-O-Matic, robotic Super Hal stuck to his instructions of bringing in Mark Hendrickson no matter the circumstances – ahead, behind, tired, not – with Superior clinging to a 4-2 lead in the seventh inning. Hendrickson gave up a two-run single to Eli Marrero to tie the game at 4-4. It appeared Super Hal would be off the hook as Super Gary left Rheal Cormier in the game too long, and Bobby Crosby delivered a two-run homer in the eighth to put Superior up 6-4. Three walks and a ground out made it 7-4, and still Hendrickson trotted out to the mound for the bottom of the eighth. Richard Hidalgo doubled but the next two hitters made outs. Then everything fell apart. Jason Varitek doubled in Hidalgo and Khalil Greene singled in Varitek. Jose Hernandez rolled a RF (x) to Brian Giles that Giles could not handle, a single and an error that scored Greene to tie the game at 7-7 and put Hernandez on third. Marrero singled Hernandez in and the Clips were up 8-7. So stunned were the Clips that they sent setup man Salomon Torres to the mound for the ninth instead of K-Rod, thinking it was the eighth, and were puzzled to see him showing up as “tired” when he hadn’t pitched in the series. He walked Richie Sexson to lead off (Sexson had come off the bench to face Eddie Guardado, kudos for that move, Hal), but David DeJesus defied logic, didn’t lay down a bunt and promptly hit into a double play. Bobby Crosby grounded out to end the game. Shannon Stewart and Greene each had three of Applegate’s 16 hits; Ray Durham had three for Superior. Hendrickson gave up 7 hits in his 1 2/3 innings of work, and though he was tired throughout, none of the hits were fatigue hits.

Clips rebound to deck Dogs twice

Following three feeble losses to Detroit, the Clips rebounded with 1-0 and 5-2 wins to complete a 2-out-of-5 series with the Demolition Dogs.

Game Four saw a highly improbable pitching duel between Victor Zambrano and Ted Lilly. Zambrano went the distance and gave up only three hits, but one of those was a double by Jason Varitek, who eventually scored on a sac fly for the game's only run. Lilly struck out 10 and held Detroit to just five hits himself, but needed ninth-inning help from Mr. Perfect, Francisco Rodriguez, who shut the door with one out and a runner at third by whiffing Larry Walker and getting Garrett Anderson to line out to end the game.

In Game Five, homers by Khalil Greene and David Ortiz led to a three-run third that KO'd Detroit starter Steve Trachsel. The Dog's pen kept Applegate at bay the rest of the game, but Detroit couldn't muster much offense against Brett Tomko and Rheal Cormier, who came on in the seventh for a three-inning save of a 5-2 Clips victory.

Applegate mustered just 11 runs and 26 hits in the series, a stark contrast to their April road series in Detroit when the Clips racked up 41 runs on 52 hits.

The Clips stand 6-9 on the month as they open their home series with Superior.

Demolition Dogs demolishing Clips

In two of the least-fun Strat games ever played, the Detroit Demolition Dogs whacked the Clips 8-3 and 10-1 in the opening two games of their May series.

Even 'lousy' weather couldn't stop Detroit from cranking three homers in the Game One victory, while Greg Maddux went the distance on a three-hitter. Bonds, Sosa and Walker all homered.

The Clips lined into two double plays (one following a leadoff triple) and grounded into another.

Game Two damage was done by Sosa and Walker with longballs, and Pudge with a four-hit, three-RBI night. Barry Zito got his first win after seven losses, with relief help from Dan Miceli.

Update: The pain continued for Applegate in Game Three, as Al Leiter held the Clips to three hits, and Mike Lamb broke up a 1-1 tie in the ninth for Detroit with an RBI single that scored Ken Griffey Jr., who had doubled. Lamb's hit came off Adam Eaton as both starters went the distance. The 2-1 win gave Detroit a 3-0 lead in the series.

Midseason All-Star convention!

It's been about 10 years since our last midseason All-Star convention -- 1995 in Texas, I believe? Anyway, the stomping grounds of many league members at one time or another, Detroit Rock City, is hosting this year's events. Because of the anticipated excess of ticket requests, the Tigers and MLB will be holding a drawing to determine who gets a chance to purchase ticket packages. The chance to sign up for the drawing begins today, Wednesday, at 10 a.m. Information on how to register for the chance is here.

Please go to the page and sign up, even if you have no interest in going; those of us with Detroit ties will be happy to buy the package off of you. The deadline to register is Thursday, May 26 and the drawing is Tuesday, May 31. Each winning entry can purchase two ticket packages, priced at $286 or $386 per package, which includes a ticket to the game plus all of the other festivities surrounding the game.

Let me know when you've signed up so we can keep track.

A midseason convention is also a great opportunity to play face-to-face July games, as well as conduct those all-important trade talks! Some of our best memories are from midseason conventions in Cincinnati, Houston, Baltimore and Dallas. All we need is tickets.

Update: The form to register for the all-star lottery is here.

Here's a couple photos from past All-Star Game Extravaganzas...

Clips upset Gophers 3-2 but melt against Heat

The Clips have jumped out to a surprising 2-1 lead on the Bushwood Gophers, following convincing 10-3 and 14-3 wins in games two and three. Bushwood took the opener 7-4. Games 2 and 3 were a comedy of X-errors for Bushwood, with Applegate taking advantage of friendly split cards to rack up many late-inning runs. We played by NetPlay, with Dave hosting via dialup; games four and five are slated for Wednesday night.

Update: Applegate's series in Tropical is also underway, with two Netplay games concluded Tuesday night. Tropical won the first game 2-1, with Jason Schmidt and the bullpen holding the Clips to two hits; Applegate rebounded to win the second game 5-4, thanks to a three-run homer from Frank Thomas and Francisco Rodriguez's 22nd scoreless inning of relief work.

Update II: Applegate takes the rubber game of the Gopher series 6-3 thanks to Jose Hernandez's pinch-hit three-run homer in the seventh off Nate Robertson, who had entered the game to face David Ortiz. Bushwood had won Game 4 9-4.

Update III: Tropical polished off the Clips with three straight wins, 5-4, 6-2 and 13-8, to take the series 4-1.

Welcome to the Clip Joint

I always find it interesting to look back at the history of the I-75 Mail League to see how our forms of communication have changed over the years. Back in the early '80s, we thought we were hot stuff when we played a game by phone, and the cool tool of the day was having a hands-free speaker phone. Newsletters were typewritten and duplicated, often at work in the middle of the night when no one would catch you using the copy machine.

Then came computers that allowed us to input and edit newsletters more efficiently and make them more attractive. No more cutting out the four-color I-75 logo from the previous newsletter. E-mail allowed us to send those newsletters around without stamps.

Then came the Internet, and instant messaging, and NetPlay. And now we almost never talk by phone and you can even draft remotely just about as efficiently as being there.

And now, the next generation of communication: Weblogs. This is mine, The Clip Joint. Weblogs are a form of citizen journalism, an opportunity for individual expression. I'm going to be careful with what I express here because of guidelines I must adhere to where I work. But I'll be sharing interesting nuggets about the performance of the Clips and other things about the league that I find interesting. There will be opportunities for you to chime in and agree with me or disagree. You can ignore me too, I won't be offended. I'm doing this mostly to learn more about blogs and how they operate. I don't know how frequently I'll update it. I'll try to update league standings too when I can, but I have no intention of using this blog to replace the league Web page. So, feel free to pass along comments, and if you're interested in a blog page for your own team, it's pretty easy and I'll help get you started.
