Updated mock draft for 2009

As we head into Sunday's trade-a-thon, an updated look at the 12 players projected to go in the 2009 first round (number in parentheses is ranking through end of June):

1. Evan Longoria, 3B, Tampa Bay (2): Boosted his stock in July with a .310/.402/.535 month so far.

2. Carlos Quentin, OF, Chicago White Sox (6): Power shows no signs of letting up, 26 HRs is best among available players.

3. Justin Duchscherer, SP, Oakland (10): May not have as many innings as some other candidates, but his WHIP is down to 0.87 and his opponents' batting average to .190.

4. Ryan Dempster, SP, Chicago Cubs (7): Bounced back from a mediocre June with a strong July, will have a good, balanced card. Overall WHIP of 1.17 and OBA of .208.

5. Gavin Floyd, SP, Chicago White Sox (4): WHIP has climbed from 1.12 to 1.24 in the last month.

6. Nate McLouth, OF, Pittsburgh (8): 21 homers and a .972 OPS vs. righties, but you probably will have to sit him vs. lefties.

7. Aubrey Huff, 1B/3B/DH, Baltimore (NR): Quality starts dropping off after six, but Huff offers a .944 OPS vs. RHPs.

8. Kosuke Fukudome, OF, Chicago Cubs (5): Having a horrible July but still has a .380 on-base average.

9. Edinson Volquez, SP, Cincinnati (1): Volquez has struggled in his last six starts; opponents are now hitting .226 off him and his WHIP has climbed to 1.31. Based on the chance that he'll rebound and his future potential, we slot him ninth.

10. Jay Bruce, OF, Cincinnati (3): Has not only fallen back to earth but is in danger of falling through it; still, a good 'prospect' pick.

11. Brendan Morrow, RP, Seattle (12): Best thing to happen to Brendan was J.J. Putz coming off the disabled list to resume his closer's role. That will give Brendan more innings in setup. Currently sports a 0.89 WHIP and a .134 OBA. .134!!! And righties are hitting just .100 off him! His card will be devoid of hits against righties at this point. Currently at 34 2/3 innings.

12. Kerry Wood, RP, Chicago Cubs (9): Two words: Dee-el.

No longer ranked: Skip Schumaker, St. Louis (11).
