Retain fewer players?
Posting on behalf of Jamie:
Now that we've drafted a couple of years with expanded rosters, I'd like to constrict the retained players a bit, perhaps to 14 instead of 18. It doesn't take much time to ponder the upcoming draft before it becomes obvious how much talent has already been sucked out of it. I'm a big fan of retention, but lowering the retention roster would help goose the draft a bit and also create more strategy as managers decide whether to keep the AA prospect who might still be a year away from really helping or hold onto that No. 3 starting pitcher.
It might also assist the team with a little less talent to get better quicker. Since we've all stated a certain level of concern about maintaining a level of parity, this might assist the pursuit of that goal.

I agree with Jamie's proposal, for the same reasons he stated, primarily I think it would create better league balance and give us fewer meaningless series. I would even support retaining as few as 9 players.
For my part, I would echo that sentiment, and even expand on it. Speaking (probably only for myself, I realize), I find the constant state of agitation with the rules to be frustrating. Every year it seems like we end up discussing and debating new rules proposals that run into the double digits-- and some of them aren't new. Some keep coming around and around and around again, and I'm reminded of that scene from Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me. The Will Ferrell character with the fez is a tough cookie the first two times he is asked a question, but the third breaks down his resistance, and forces him to answer honestly. As he says, "I can't stand to be asked the same question three times."
A retention league, in particular, requires some degree of stability to work. This is our 4th year (?) in this format, so I realize that some tweaking was necessary up to this point, but Doc's point is well taken, I believe. I honestly don't care how we come out on the various proposals this year, but I would hope that, whatever we agree upon as a league at the convention this year, that we can stabilize the rules for a period of time and put a moratorium on new rules proposals. It is difficult to GM a team for the future when the rules change, fairly dramatically, every single season. That's my two cents, anyway.
I believe that last year we expanded the retained roster size from 15 to 18, in what I recall was a Jamie Turner proposal. At some point, we have stop tinkering with roster sizes and let managers plan and strategize. The hardest way to rebuild is if the roster size changes every season, and the guy you traded for this year turns out to be a guy you can't keep next year, because the roster size shrunk.
